Litter/Pollutants |
There was 26 mm of rain in the previous 48 hours, after a dry week. The resulting flow overtopped the litter trap and deposited large amounts of litter over the reed beds in the top ponds of the wetlands. Action has at last been taken by Melbourne Water and the EPA, regarding the oil contaminating the Crosby arm and the upper pond of the wetlands. Signs have been placed at access points to the Crosby arm and at the Blackburn Rd access to the wetlands, warning the public to avoid contact with the water, so we did not test those sites. The amount of oil has greatly reduced. Sediment removal and rockwork has also been done during the last week in the Fiander arm and at the confluence of the Crosby and Fiander arms. This disturbance may have contributed to turbidity at Regent street (site 2) and in the wetland (site 5). There were lots of frogs audible at site 5 (wetlands lower pond).
